REVIEW, DARCCY

By Lakeisha Goedluck

At number 199, Darccy boutique sits cosily on the corner where Talbot road interjects renowned Portobello. Originally a wholesale label; Darccy clothing and accessories are simply sugar, and spice and all things nice.

Concept
Darccy boutique  has a  certain quaintness about it: from the Victorian inspired dresses, to the ornate vintage style accessories. The idea is to appeal to young women, who have an affinity with pearls and jewelled detailing- although there are select pieces for the older lady. Its about creating clothing for those who wish they were born in an earlier era: when elegance and daintiness were paramount.

First Impressions
From the window, the rows of pastel dresses seem to echo the streets of Notting Hill itself.  Upon entering the boutique, the furore of the outside market is left behind; allowing a peaceful and relaxed shopping experience to unfold. There is one sales assistant, Sylvia, who is on hand to provide information about price, and generally help with selecting the most suitable pieces.

Experience
There is a pleasantry about wandering around Darccy boutique. Although the space is quite small, this works in the boutiques favour. It is easy to get lost browsing through racks of dresses, arranged by colour. The table in the centre of the store, layered with trinkets, is perhaps its most absorbing feature. Its a pleasure to pick up the pieces, perhaps try them on, and generally marvel at the craftsmanship.

Product
The design of the dresses are timeless, but the colours are on trend for this S/S14. Comprised of mainly silk and chiffon, dresses come in every pastel hue: from frosty pinks, to the softest lemon yellow. What makes Darccy garments so uniquely appealing, is the attention to detail; the small bows gathered around a neck line, or the pearl feature on the cuff of a sleeve. Theres a romantic element to their construction.

Environment
The boutique walls are pristine white, which creates the perfect backdrop for the light hues of their clothing. Oddly, there is no music playing in store which removes any distractions and places all focus on the contents. Around the store are well selected vintage ornaments: aged bird cages and an old chest spilling with scarves add to that period feel.

Verdict
Darccy boutique is the epitome of pretty. From their clothing line and accessories, to the layout and decoration of the store. With dresses ranging from around £90-£140, they are perfect for special occasions like weddings and monumental birthdays. Alternatively if  delicate retro styling is what you’re after, Darccy does not disappoint.
